I’ve read with interest and incredulity recent letters expressing opinions that folks should simply let ICE agents do their jobs because denizens acting and living here legally have nothing to fear. Stephen Miller says ICE officers have “immunity” from their actions in performance of their duties and alluded to local, constitutionally protected protesters as terrorists. So, what really is the job of masked, heavily armed agents, beholden to no local or state authority?
I recoil and cower at a sharply worded placard as much as the next person, however, undentifiable, heavily armed, militant style groups, unimpededly grabbing people and children off the streets, spiriting them incommunicado, out of state within hours, really raises the terror bar.
As far as the innocent having nothing to fear, if the writers regularly read this publication, they’d be familiar with factual accounts of law-abiding citizens being threatened, detained, arrested and their rights trampled on and, in some cases, physically harmed or killed by these agents.
The recent killing of a citizen practicing free speech, Mr. Alex Pretti of Minneapolis, Minnesota, seems to have been prompted not by a mean sign or menacing discourse but by his coming to the aid of another protester. It would seem he also had the temerity to be exercising another constitutional right of carrying a licensed firearm. For this he is being vilified and pilloried by an administration that gave blanket pardons to Jan. 6, 2021 protesters, who carried many weapons to a protest, including handguns. Terrorism, indeed!
