We are living in a time of two separate Maines and two separate Americas. Our nation and our people are perhaps the most divided since the Civil War. As an independent candidate for governor, I also see it in the two gubernatorial campaigns. That’s right, there are two very separate gubernatorial campaigns for this one state.

At the campaign events I have attended, with one exception, the Republicans have been nowhere to be found. It is as if the only issues and voters that matter are their issues and their base. Several of the well-known Democrats also attend the events I have attended, but they also play primarily to their base. It is as if each party is campaigning to their own Maine.

As an independent candidate, I am not beholden to either party and do not have to follow any party’s orders. I have no large donors to repay. I will answer only to the people. Those who need help the most will get the most help. I will put people first.

We can’t afford to continue on opposite paths. This is not the Maine I know or the Maine I will accept. The Democrats won’t work with a Republican governor and vice versa. As an independent governor, my primary goal will be to find common ground and build a bridge across this widening ideological gap that is destroying Maine and our nation.

If there ever was a time that Maine needed an independent governor, that time is now.
