A Gorham man died Tuesday on Plains Road in Poland when he attempted to pass another vehicle and collided with an oncoming pickup truck.
Dylan Sanphy, 26, died in the midafternoon crash, according to a release posted on Facebook by William Gagne, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy.
A preliminary investigation indicates Sanphy, driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, attempted to pass another vehicle while traveling east and collided head-on with a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by Edward Morris, 52, of Mechanic Falls, which was traveling west and towing an enclosed snowmobile trailer.
“During the passing maneuver, the Jeep collided head-on with the Chevrolet pickup truck,” Gagne wrote in the post.
Sanphy was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash, which was reported at 3:40 p.m., remains under investigation, Gagne said.
Two adult female passengers in the Jeep sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Morris was evaluated at the scene but not taken to a hospital, Gagne said.
Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage and are considered totaled.
A crash reconstructionist from the Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with the investigation. Assisting agencies included the Mechanic Falls Police Department, Oxford Fire-Rescue, and Auburn Fire-Rescue.
The vehicle that was being passed by the Jeep is described as a Subaru. The driver did not remain at the scene.
Investigators would like to speak with the driver or occupants of that vehicle, according to Gagne. Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Chris Miller at [email protected] or call 207-753-2599.
