PORTLAND — After crushing Bangor last year, 46-8, to win a state title, Cheverus couldn’t have expected defending its Class A crown would be even easier.
Turns out it was exactly that.
Donald Goodrich rushed for 146 yards and four touchdowns and returned a kickoff for another score in a 49-7 drubbing over Lawrence Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Fullback Brent Green added 187 yards and two touchdowns.
The championship is the 10th in the career of Cheverus coach John Wolfgram, who also won titles at Madison, Gardiner and South Portland.
Cheverus star running back Spencer Cooke made a late cameo appearance (10 rushes, 20 yards), his first game back since suffering a broken bone in his leg at the end of the regular season. But it was Goodrich and Green, both juniors, who led the Stags to 513 yards of total offense.
“We were kind of running back by committee, and the committee was an outstanding committee,” Wolfgram said. “I thought we had real nice balance in terms of throwing the ball early. We threw the ball when we wanted to, took the things we wanted to take and then mixed it up between Donald and Brent carrying the ball.”
Lawrence turned the ball over five times, starting with the game’s opening possession when Cheverus (12-0) recovered a fumble at the Bulldogs’ 49. Seven plays later, Green scored from a yard out and the Stags had the lead with 6:22 left in the first quarter.
Another turnover, this an interception by Liam Fitzpatrick, set up Cheverus’ next score. Fitzpatrick had his 63-yard return to the end zone called back due to a holding call on Cheverus, but that just delayed the inevitable.
Cam Olson went deep to Louie DiStasio (four catches, 128 yards) for 50 yards, Green ran for 25, then Goodrich scored his first touchdown from a yard out to make it 14-0.
Another Goodrich 1-yard touchdown made it 21-0 before Lawrence (11-1) finally got on the board on a 52-yard run by Anthony Sementelli. But Bulldogs fans barely had a chance to celebrate as Goodrich returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to put the Cheverus cushion back to three touchdowns.
“Our wedge did a great job,” Goodrich said. “They picked up some key blocks and I was able to find a nice seam. It was great blocking all around.”
Goodrich started the second half with his third 1-yard score, then after another Lawrence fumble, Green had another one-yard TD run of his own. Goodrich capped the scoring with his longest TD run from scrimmage, a 52-yard jaunt.
Cheverus held Lawrence to 171 total yards, just 38 yards on 10 carries by all-conference running back Shaun Carroll. Olson and Distasio added interceptions.
“Some things that we planned to do didn’t work out right from the start, and they had momentum,” Lawrence coach John Hersom said. “We wanted to mix in run and pass just so we could help our run game. We knew they would be pretty strong against the run up front… but it just didn’t work out for us today.”
