Norman L. Davis

NEWRY – Norman L. Davis, 87, a lifelong resident of Newry, died Feb. 15, 2026 at his home in Newry.

He was born June 1, 1938, to Robert T. and Bertha (Rogers) Davis of Newry where he attended local schools and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel in 1955.

After graduation he worked on his father’s farm and the local road crew until 1956 when he enlisted in the Army and served for three years. He was stationed in Korea after the war.

Upon his return home from the service, he married Eleanor H. Davis of Strong on Aug. 15, 1959.

Norman worked at L.E. Davis Lumber in Bethel for many years as a lumber sorter and grader. He also worked in the woods with his father and local contractors. He served on the Newry Planning Board for several years.

Norman was an avid rock collector. He was a member of the Oxford County Gem and Mineral Association from his childhood and served occasionally as an officer for the group. He loved to collect rocks and minerals and enjoyed traveling to Nova Scotia and Arizona to find them. He learned to make cabochons and facet his finds into jewelry. For several years, he ran Mountain Minerals rock shop in his home, selling his jewelry, finds and other hobby related wares. He could also be found chatting about his hobby and selling rocks and minerals at local craft fairs.

Norman enjoyed hunting and fishing in his youth. He was an excellent gardener and sold excess produce for many years to donate funds to the Bethel Library. He was a voracious reader for most of his life, and always excited to learn something new.

He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Hanscom and her husband Brian of Newry, his son, Kenneth Davis and his partner Ann Vachon of Newry; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor on Nov. 18, 2024.

Norman asked for no services, he will be interred in the spring.
