NORWAY — At least one person was seriously injured Monday afternoon when multiple vehicles collided on Route 26 near the Norway-Oxford line.

One person was said to be trapped and unconscious in the wreckage when a garbage truck and two other vehicles collided about 11 a.m. Witnesses said it appeared a woman was pulled from one vehicle and loaded into an ambulance.

By nightfall, police from several departments were still reconstructing the crash site as part of their investigation. The extent of injuries suffered in the wreck was not immediately known.

When emergency crews first responded, a LifeFlight helicopter was requested at the scene. However, because the weather had grounded the helicopter, a ground crew was sent to the scene, witnesses said.

Emergency crews also contended with a fuel spill at the scene. Witnesses said a Norway-based ABC Rubbish truck was involved in the crash.

Several witnesses reported there was no snow on the road when the vehicles collided.

A section of Route 26 was closed for a time while police investigated and the scene was cleaned up. The road was open again by early evening.

Norway and Oxford police were investigating the wreck with assistance from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police.
