It took only a few minutes Monday night for the Portland Hearts of Pine to sellout their entire season for a second straight year.
Maine’s professional men’s soccer team put about 10,000 single-game tickets on sale Monday at 6 p.m. Team president Kevin Schohl said over 4,000 people were electronically queued up waiting for the sale. About 2,000 were able to make a purchase.
“They were gone in five minutes, really,” Schohl said. “It was really kind of immediate.”
Schohl said the vast majority of the tickets — roughly 500 per match for the 20 home dates — were priced between $25 and $65, with only a few of the most expensive $150 Highroller seats (which include food and beverages) available.
“We are effectively sold out for the season again now,” Schohl said.
The Hearts had previously sold out more than 4,100 season tickets.
In the team’s inaugural season, the third-division soccer franchise had 18 home matches and set USL League One records for season tickets sold and average attendance, drawing 5,800 fans per game to Fitzpatrick Stadium. The city-owned facility has a seating capacity of around 5,500.
This season, the Hearts will have 20 home games, including two exhibitions (called friendlies in soccer parlance) against yet-to-be announced opponents. Last summer Portland hosted an international friendly against the Halifax Wanderers.
With a waiting list for season tickets that exceeded 6,300 in January and is now at 6,680, Hearts of Pine management has purposely tried to find ways to get more people — especially first-time attendees — to the city-owned stadium.
To help meet some of the demand, the Hearts of Pine have added a designated standing-room only section called the Goal Zone, which will be located behind the goal closest to Hadlock Field (opposite Deering Avenue). Those tickets — about 200 per match — will go on sale March 16 at 6 p.m. Prices have not been announced.
One final option for ticket buyers will be what the club is calling its Last Chance Tickets program. These tickets, some of which will be standing room, will be available to fans who submit a short application with a wish list of which match or matches they would like to attend. Applications for Last Chance Tickets will open at 11 a.m. March 24, and remain open throughout the season.
“We expect about 400 extra tickets to be sold per game, with two extra games,” Schohl said. “We know demand is so much greater than supply. We’re busting at the seams with Fitzy.”
The Hearts of Pine open their season March 14 against the New York Cosmos, a USL1 expansion club that will play its home games in Paterson, New Jersey. The Hearts’ home opener is April 11 against defending USL1 champion One Knoxville.
