It’s been a little over two years since my last letter to the editor was published (“Trump epitomizes the worst that America has to offer,” March 16, 2024). At that time, Donald Trump was on his way to becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

The first sentence of my 2024 letter: “Should Donald Trump again become president, our country deserves every bit of bile he dishes out.”

The letter continued to state that Trump manifests the worst ideals of America: bigotry, greed, prejudice, bullying, manifest destiny, discrimination, hypocrisy, classism, male chauvinism, sexism, etc. I was afraid our country had not progressed, or wasn’t enlightened enough, to derail the oncoming, careening Trump train.

Come November 2024, my fear was proven right. Donald Trump had won the popular vote of Americans. “How could that be?” I asked myself. An obvious rhetorical question, as I already knew the answer.

President Donald had shown us years prior what he was about. America knew him all too well. And yet, we overwhelmingly voted him into office. I can’t fault Donald for being Donald. That’s who he is. He’ll never change.

But I am so hoping America can change.
