Marie-Luise “Ise” Gesine Hilde (Fokken) MacDonald
LYNNFIELD, Mass. – Marie-Luise “Ise” Gesine Hilde Fokken MacDonald, 87, of Eustis, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, in Lynnfield, Mass. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas L. MacDonald, and is survived by her two sons, Micah MacDonald and his wife, Anna, of Springfield, Va., and Duncan MacDonald and his husband, Kevin Hashem, of North Reading, Mass. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Joseph and Alexandra.
Born on April 20, 1938, in Wulkenzin, Germany, daughter of Albert and Charlotte Fokken, “Ise” trained as a registered nurse in Hamburg before immigrating to the United States in 1964. Arriving with only a few English words, she quickly learned the language while volunteering in the pediatric ward at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She later served as postmaster of Eustis from 1987 to 2006, continuing a longstanding family tradition since 1949.
Ise was a devoted mother and a deeply engaged member of her community. She volunteered as president of the Stratton PTC, as “Tale Twister” for the Lions Club, earned her third-degree black belt in karate at the age of 65, and later taught exercise classes to fellow seniors.
She lived with energy and curiosity—traveling the world, returning to her childhood home in former East Germany and visiting her father’s birthplace in Tanzania. She was a familiar and beloved presence throughout the Stratton-Eustis area, often seen biking, walking, or cross-country skiing through town.
Her family finds comfort in her peace and in the remarkable life she lived. A memorial service will be held this spring in Eustis, Maine.
Donations may be made to Stratton School or UNICEF.
