Democrats seem to resent folks with “the big bucks,” wanting to impose even higher taxes on people and companies who already fill a higher percentage of the state’s tax income coffers. Generally, those big bucks are either hard earned, or inherited as a result of hard work.
Rather, how about being more creative and taking a closer look at capping deductions and eliminating loopholes that are less or not at all advantageous for people of more modest means? How about raising the tax rate on luxury items like boats, planes and luxury cars?
The very words “higher taxes” elicit negative, knee-jerk reactions. Implementing broad, higher taxes will surely encourage businesses, families and retirees to take their taxable income elsewhere when considering moving to Maine. I call that shooting oneself in the foot.
