After years of delays, repeated promises and shifting timelines from the U.S. Postal Service, the West Paris Post Office is finally reopening its doors.
U.S. Rep. Jared Golden announced in a news release Friday the office is scheduled to open on Saturday, April 4, at its new location, 141 Bethel Road.
Golden has been pressing the federal agency for answers after the previous office at 238 Main St. abruptly closed in 2021, pushing for a concrete reopening plan and introducing legislation to prevent other unannounced closures in rural areas.
“Since USPS announced the closure of the West Paris post office my requests for status updates about the reopening have been met with unsatisfactory and ultimately false responses from your agency,” Golden wrote in a 2024 letter to then-Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
On Friday, Golden said he was glad that residents have their post office back.
“While the USPS should have been more prompt and transparent throughout this process, this reopening is a happy ending to the saga — and welcome news for the many families who have reached out to me about equal access to the post office,” Golden said.
The years of delays and shifting timelines spurred Golden to introduce the Protecting Postal Performance Act in March 2025. The bill would block the USPS from “downsizing facilities in underserved areas, provide more oversight over modifications to delivery schedules, and increase public transparency on proposed changes.” If passed, it would require a public hearing, a public summary and a 180-day delay before any closure or consolidation.
Golden has since announced he is stepping down from Congress.
The American Postal Workers Union of Maine said in the news release they were grateful for Golden’s efforts to reopen the post office in West Paris.
“The Post Office is an integral part of all communities by providing rural mail delivery, getting medications to its residents, especially veterans, voting by mail, parcel services and money orders,” said Jennifer Garland, executive vice president of the union.
