DEAR SUN SPOTS: I work with several dog rescues in the Maine. Miles to Freedom in Oxford is a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue.
In the last few weeks, Miles to Freedom Animal Rescue has been hit hard with several heartbreaking blows and devastating losses. The accounts are depleted for emergency surgeries, procedures and treatment for unforeseen illnesses. We are asking for help so the dogs and puppies can continue to be saved at the rescue. Three puppies are hospitalized for Parvo and fighting for their lives while their families are waiting and praying.
All puppies had fecal tests prior to transport. This disease has a three-to-14-day incubation period so it can take that long before symptoms show after being exposed. Two other puppies recently succumbed to illness and never made it to an adoptive family. Everyone is absolutely heartbroken.
Every donation, no matter the amount, helps continue with lifesaving care.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: How is the kitty with diabetes doing? I have been wondering about him and his person. Is the cat better now that he is on medication?
I also have a cat with diabetes so my heart goes out to this other reader. — Vicki, no town
ANSWER: Thank you for asking, Vicki. Just this past weekend I got a note from our reader, Henry. In the Feb. 6 Sun Spots, he had asked for advice and moral support regarding medication for his ill cat.
A GoFundMe was started for his kitty and donations were received to help pay for medical care.
The update I received is a sad one. During a follow-up appointment, it was discovered that the kitty had cancer. He passed away April 4.
Henry is missing his furry friend, who he had with him for over 10 years. I know all you cat lovers who have had this happen know what it feels like, and I appreciate how you reached out to offer advice and support.
