As expected, Shenna Bellows does not, in any way, describe the wishes of Maine voters with her proposed referendum question for the upcoming election.
The majority of voters of Maine wanted it perfectly clear that men (assigned male at birth) have no place in women’s sports, women’s bathrooms or women’s detention facilities. Bellows is not in the habit of listening to voters, especially when she does not share their view. The confused draft question presented by Bellows fails, deliberately (in my opinion), the wishes of the electorate.
I hope that Democrats who support the opinion of the majority of Maine voters, according to polling, that transgender female athletes do not belong in girls’ sports, will remember the actions of our secretary of state.
I also ask Maine’s Republicans, who may also be questioning their votes during this troubled time, to think about how much worse things would be with a stronger Democratic majority.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
