Treat yourself to a snazzy night out while supporting the Maine College of Art & Design scholarship program. You’ll see the work of emerging voices in fashion, with clothing designed, developed and constructed by MECA & D students in the textile and fashion program. Runway models will showcase innovative fabrics created through weaving, knitting, printing and dyeing. Splurge an extra $30 for a raffle ticket, and you just might win a limited edition leather bag made by Adriana Uribe-Rodriguez, valued at $575.

It’s time for the 5th annual MSMT yard sale. This means you can shop ’til you drop for a wide range of donated treasures, while supporting local theater. If you’re hardcore about shopping, there’s a presale from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, for $25 at the door. And if you’re all about getting rock bottom prices, all items will be half off on Sunday.

Maine Pottery Tour

The annual Maine Pottery Tour is a weekend when dozens of pottery and ceramics studios statewide are open to the public. You can meet artists, watch demonstrations, see the kilns and shop for pottery and ceramics. Participants include Tall Pines Pottery in Brunswick, Ocean Fire Pottery in York and Muddy Toes Pottery in New Gloucester. The Maine Pottery Tour website at mainepotterytour.org includes information about the Plan My Tour app featuring online maps of the studios to help you shape the perfect pottery adventure.

Celebrate International Jazz Day by catching a Novel Jazz Septet afternoon performance. The septet is dedicated to sharing the music and stories of Duke Ellington and and songwriter Billy Strayhorn, who composed thousands of works. Novel Jazz Septet’s show will include classic standards along with lesser known pieces, all inspired by original recordings and manuscripts in the Duke Ellington collection at the Smithsonian and the Strayhorn collection at the Library of Congress.

An Evening with Ira Glass

Ira Glass is the longtime host of the weekly public radio show “This American Life.” The storyteller brings his “Seven Things I’ve Learned” tour to Portland for a night of life lessons from his esteemed career. Glass will use audio clips, music and video to help him share what drives his passion and creativity, and how failures and successes have guided his decisions.

There’s an entire festival in Portland dedicated to hard cider on Sunday. So if you’re a fan, and at least 21 years old, make a plan to attend. More than 13 producers, including Absolem Cider Company (Winthrop), Samuel Smith’s Brewery (United Kingdom) and Eden Ciders (Newport, Vermont) will be on site pouring samples. There will also be plenty of local food available for purchase.

The Psychology of Serial Killers and Why They Captivate Us
