Sen. Susan Collins should make a permanent place for herself in history by leading an unambiguous campaign in Congress to remove Donald Trump from the presidency of the United States.
Maybe after the midterms, there will be enough change in Congress to remove Trump from office. But can we afford to have such an erratic person in that office for any amount of time? Recently, Trump declared that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. However, any honest assessment makes us far more at risk right now with an unstable person such as Trump, who has access to the use of the largest stockpile on nuclear weapons on the planet.
I do believe that this era will not do well in American history. No history text that any school district would buy will support this political time as anything but a dark age.
There is no doubt that history will vilify the Congress of today for not exercising its duty to the American people. Collins is the pivotal senator who can stand out for all time as the one who broke away and led the pack back to the right path; or, she can remain with the pack with her legacy tainted forever by her lack of moral courage. Collins, and the rest of us, would be better served (and safer) by the second choice.
