PORTLAND — “Mamma Mia!,” the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will overtake Merrill Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 12, and run through Jan. 14.

Celebrating more than 4,000 performances in its 10th year at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre, “Mamma Mia!” remains among Broadway’s top-selling musicals.

The blockbuster feature film adaptation, starring Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep, is the most successful movie musical of all time, grossing $600 million worldwide.

In Benny Andersson and Bjern Ulvaeus’ musical, Donna, an independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she has raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends — practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multidivorcee Tanya — from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos.

But, Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, Sophie brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled.

Featuring ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” “Mamma Mia!” is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-14, with an additional Saturday show at 2 p.m. For tickets, ranging from $50 to $65, call PortTix at 842-0800; visit the box office at Merrill Auditorium, 20 Myrtle St.; or log on to www.portlandovations.org.
