UNITY — The Gawler Family Band will provide live music at the Unity Barnraisers’ community meal fundraiser on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts.
The meal featuring food from local sources will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. The band will play beginning at 7:30 p.m.
John and Ellen Gawler, and their daughters, Molly, Edith and Elsie Gawler, perform an assortment of old and new sounds from many folk traditions. They accompany their warm family harmonies with fiddles, banjo, wooden banjo, cello, guitar, ukulele and piano. Whether crooning a ballad or playing a rollicking fiddle tune, their arrangements often feature anecdotes of historical or humorous content.
Although the Gawlers are best known for their collection of dance tunes in the Scots-Irish and French-Canadian traditions, their repertoire may include a gutsy Appalachian work song, a “Sweet Honey in the Rock” a cappella number or an ode to everyday life.
Tickets for the meal and concert are $20. Call 948-9005. Tickets for the concert only may be purchased at www.unitymaine.org or at the door. UCCPA is at 42 Depot St.
