Turner writer to release NASCAR book Saturday
AUBURN — George Campbell of Turner will debut his new book, “Busch North Scene: The Busch Years 1987-2007,” at a book launch party Saturday at Hilton Garden Inn. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m.
Campbell will be available to sign copies of his book along with two-time NASCAR Champion Brad Leighton, who wrote the foreword for the book. There will be other NASCAR personalities from the region at the event available to sign copies as well.
Campbell covered auto racing for a variety of national and regional publications in the 1990’s. In 1999 he launched his own news print publication, Busch North Scene. His goal was to cover NASCAR in the northeast region of the country with the newspaper. Within two years, Campbell and his staff members had grown the paper into the top-selling NASCAR newspaper on newsstands throughout much of New England.
The new book recaps the racers, teams and events that shaped the NASCAR Busch North Series from 1987 through 2007. Those were the years that the very popular northeast based autoracing series was sponsored by Busch Beer. The book contains fun and informative personal reflections from Campbell and Busch North Scene staff members, as well as many of the personalities that made the series popular.
Campbell grew up in Mechanic Falls, where he attended Elm Street School before graduating from Edward Little High School. He has lived in Turner for more than 20 years.
The book contains 400 pages and over 150 photos. Among the drivers covered in the book are Maine racers Ricky Craven, Andy Santerre, Joe Bessey, Mike Rowe, Dick McCabe, Bruce Haley, Tracy Gordon and Kelly Moore. The book has a chapter titled ‘Maine’ that takes a close look at the racers and tracks that were vital to the growth of the series in its early years.
The book is a follow up to Campbell’s first book, “Busch North Scene — A Ten Year Retrospective,” which recapped the 2000 decade in the popular NASCAR series. Copies of both books will be available at the event.
Detailed information on the book, including the complete index, may be found at www.neracing.com or by ‘liking’ the Busch North Scene facebook page.
