WILTON — Franklin County United Bikers of Maine gave $1,900 to Western Maine Community Action on Friday, an amount that will provide Christmas dinner for 100 families throughout the county.

Fundraising and donations raised the money this year for the Christmas baskets given out through WMCA,  Tim Fournier, director for Franklin County United Bikers of Maine, said.

The funds will purchase turkeys, chickens, vegetables and other ingredients for Christmas-dinner baskets, said Judy Frost of WMCA.  The  baskets will be readied for delivery starting Wednesday.

Each December for about 20 years, the group of about 110 members has raised funds to help the WMCA Christmas basket program. Donations from area businesses helped this year, including those from Finley Funeral Home, Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, Shiretown Insurance Agency, Livermore Falls Baking Company, Ted Berry Company, Hilltop Collision Center Inc., Dale and Renate Madison, Hillside Sports Club and Verso Paper.

The United Bikers of Maine annual toy run brought 4,000 toys back to WMCA’s Christmas programs, Frost said.

During the state’s largest charitable event in September, riders from across the state brought 65,000 toys to Augusta, Fournier said. These were divided between 16 counties and the Indian Nation.

Along with fun rides and fundraising, Franklin County and Oxford County United Bikers of Maine join the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets and American Legion on the third Friday of August for a 19-mile POW-MIA run, a mile for each of the 19 MIAs from Maine, he said.

The group works with the Legislature on motorcycle rights. They are dedicated to safety, education and community service, Fournier said.
