100 years ago, 1912

At the regular meeting of the Auburn school board last evening the small-pox epidemic and the precautionary measures to be adopted in the schools were discussed at great length. The members of the board unanimously endorsed the action of the board of health in excluding from the schools all pupils who have not been vaccinated.

50 years ago, 1962

The winter series of square dance programs sponsored by the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department starts up again Friday night featuring well-known caller Rod Linnell.

The programs, at the Fairview School multi-purpose room, are open to the public and will continue from 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday until March, according to Harry G. Coulter Jr., Auburn recreation director.

A square dance festival to take place later in the year will be planned after the program.

25 years ago, 1987

Maine’s unemployment rate increased slightly in November to 4.4 percent from 4.2 percent in October. This slight increase was due to seasonal influences, as unemployment typically rises in the late fall in Maine.

The current 4.4 percent is the lowest November rate since 1967, and is well below the comparable U.S. rate of 6.6 percent for November 1986.
