LEWISTON — HealthSteps, part of the Prevention & Wellness Services offered through St. Mary’s Health System, has announced the winter 2012 specialty classes.

Anusara-inspired yoga: Open to new and experienced students. This class is an excellent way to have fun while improving overall health, well-being, strength, flexibility and posture. Relieve muscle tension, stress and aches and pains. Mondays, Jan. 23- March 5 (no class on Feb. 6), 5:30-6:30 p.m. $75.

Ballroom dancing: Waltz, swing, basic dance steps and patterns. This is a great introductory class for beginners or those who want to brush up on their skills. Wednesdays, Jan. 11-Feb. 1, 6:45-7:45 p.m. Instructor: Diane Williams. $70 per couple.

Beginner bellydancing: Bellydancing provides cardiovascular exercise and tones muscles with gentle and flowing moves. No prior dance experience required; suitable for all ages, skill levels and body types. Dress comfortably in workout clothing. Stockings or bare feet are recommended. Wednesdays, Jan. 11-Feb. 1, 6-7 p.m. $45.

Gentle exercise: This class is designed for those with arthritis, recovering from cancer or any other individual who desires a mild form of exercise. It helps improve range of motion, strength, posture, balance and coordination. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dec. 27-Jan. 26, 9:15-10 a.m. $24.

Hip hop cardio: New. Intense cardio combined with groovin’ hip hop moves. Thursdays, Jan. 5-Feb. 2, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Instructor: Glenn Atkins. $25/$10 for HealthSteps Core members.

Lose with me!: A 12-week weight loss session focused on helping make healthier lifestyle choices. Classes include goal setting, exercise recommendations, nutrition education and peer support. Wednesdays, Jan. 11-March 28, noon-12:30 p.m. Instructors: Jamie Pepin and Jennifer Smith. $99.

Pilates: This mat class is a great alternative workout designed to increase  fitness level. Students can expect full body strengthening with particular emphasis on the core musculature. Wear non-restrictive attire and bring a Pilates/yoga mat. Thursdays, Jan. 19-Feb. 23, 5:30-6:30 p.m. $60

Prenatal yoga: Whether an experienced yogi or new to the practice, you can receive many benefits from this class. Work to open and strengthen the legs, back and pelvic floor, improve postural alignment to alleviate back pain and practice breath and meditation exercises to help with labor. Bring a pillow and water to class. Mondays, Jan. 23-March 5 (no class on Feb. 6), 6:45-7:45 p.m. Cost: $75.

Qigong: Over the years we tend to deplete our Qi, our life force, which causes us to feel tired, anxious, worried and somewhat sluggish. In this practice, you will visualize and activate Qi with both quiet and active Qigong. Tuesdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 7, 5:30-6:15 p.m. Instructor: Jason Grundstrum-Whitney. $40, discounted rate of $60 if participate in both Tai Chi and Qigong.

Racquetball: Specific time slots are available for registration Monday through Friday on the hour for an hour from 6 a.m. to noon. Cost with Core HealthSteps membership, $20 for the entire winter/spring session which runs from Jan. 3-May 25. Without Core membership: one hour, one time per week is $95, or one hour, twice per week is $152.

Senior fitness: This one-hour class provides participants with a safe and effective workout that includes a warm-up, cardiovascular component, resistance training, balance and flexibility exercises. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 30-March 2. Instructor: Johanne Healey. $32.

Tai Chi: This class is a short form based on the Sun Style family of Tai Chi and also includes some Qigong movements. Excellent for health, balance, circulation and overall well-being. It is also a great for people who have arthritis or injuries which prevent them from doing low postured forms. Tuesdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 7, 6:15-7 p.m. Instructor: Jason Grundstrum-Whitney. $40, discounted rate of $60 if participate in both Tai Chi and Qigong.

Tennis: Specific time slots available for registration Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to noon. With Core membership, $20 for the entire winter/spring session; Without Core membership, $144.

Tobacco cessation counseling, single session: A great option for a self-motivated person who simply needs the resources to stop smoking. $45.

Multi-session (three): With a smoking cessation coach, set a quit date and work through the quitting process. Many find the additional support to be a great advantage to their stopping the use of tobacco. $75.

Zumba: A blend of Latin and international dance themes that combines high energy and motivating music with unique easy-to-follow dance steps and body sculpting movements. Tuesdays, Jan. 3-31, 4:30-5:30 p.m. $25 or $10 for HealthSteps Core members.
