MINOT — Selectmen took initial steps Monday to form a committee to develop a plan for building an addition to the Central Fire Station.
Selectmen were prompted to do so after action taken at Saturday’s annual town meeting. Townspeople turned down a plan that would almost double the station’s size.
Selectman Steve French suggested that perhaps the committee could expand its scope of work on a plan for the fire station addition to include work on an overall capital projects plan for the town.
Selectman Dan Callahan said it would be helpful for people to have a clear picture of the extent of the town’s investment in facilities and equipment.
“And also to have an idea of when things might need replacing and what they might be costing,” Callahan said.
Callahan volunteered to help set up the committee.
Residents interested in serving on a committee should contact Town Administrator Arlan Saunders at the Town Office.
After other town meeting action that approved purchase of replacing Engine 1, a 1982 International, Selectman Dean Campbell said the Fire Department will begin to prepare specifications, with hopes that the new truck will available within the year.
Selectmen also authorized Treasurer Holly Packard to prepare a check for $14,492 to pay for the half-ton pickup approved at town meeting. Saunders said that earlier in the day he had contacted O’Connor GMC and expected he would have an invoice for that amount later this week.
Highway Supervisor Scott Parker reported he used up the winter sand pile and would be putting up another 300 cubic yards Wednesday.
The town put up 3,500 cubic yards this year, compared to 4,500 a year ago.
Saunders noted that the town has received 742 tons of salt to date, well within the 1,000 tons maximum guaranteed for the year under terms of the contract.
In other business, selectmen voted to appoint Dean Campbell as board chairman for the year and Dan Gilpatric to serve as vice chairman.
