100 years ago, 1912
Fire nearly destroyed the rook on a story and a half house owned by John H. Swart on Maloney Avenue, Lewiston, Thursday morning. The fire was caused by an overheated metal pipe which extended thru the roof. The auto chemical crew was on the scene in short order and demonstrated its worth. The run for the horses was long and the chemical crew had practically completed its work when the rest of the apparatus arrived.
50 years ago, 1962
The new quarters of the W.T. Grant department store at the Northwood Park Shopping Center on Main Street, Lewiston, will soon be ready for occupancy. The new store, under construction since late last fall, has now been completed. The large letters spelling out the company name were recently installed on the attractive facade of the building. Space for other stores is provided on either side of the Grant store, including a new State Liquor Commission store which was opened shortly before Christmas.
25 years ago, 1987
If a rush on local nutrition centers in the next day or so results in a sellout of Vitamin C, two-time Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Linus Pauling is probably to blame. Pauling extolled the value of that vitamin and others before a standing-room-only crowd at Olin Arts Center at Bates College Wednesday night. The 86-year-old scientist spoke with energy and wit for well over an hour.
