USS Canberra ceremony

LEWISTON — The USS Canberra CAG-2 Reunion Association, in conjunction with all veterans in the Lewiston-Auburn area and surrounding communities, will conduct a silent prayer at noon Saturday, March 31, at the Vietnam marker on the Lewiston side of the Vietnam Memorial Bridge, Main Street.

The prayer will be held in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War, those who were wounded and held as prisoners of war and those who are still missing. The service will be held rain or shine. All veterans and the public are invited.

The U.S.S. Canberra CAG-2 was deployed to Vietnam five times. The Canberra carried terrier missiles and used its eight-inch guns to fire on the Vietcong until it was relieved by the Battleship USS Missouri, which had 16-inch guns. The sea area that the U.S. ships used for bombardment was called “Shotgun Alley.”

Nadeau’s name was drawn from entries of those utilizing the Coalition’s free tax preparation sites throughout the 2012 tax season. There were two winners, the other being Annette Champagne who was unavailable for a photo.
