CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Tom Hanson has skied Sugarloaf Mountain more than anyone else this year. In fact, there is proof of it.
With a nifty Web app, alpinereplay.com, anyone with a GPS-enabled device can track a number of statistics on how far, how fast and where they have been, how many calories burned and a number of other fun facts about their ski, snowboard or hiking experience that day, week or all season long.
Hanson, of Orrington, is not only first in slope time, but he is first in vertical drop and total distance skied. He’s passed the 3,000-mile mark, and the 3.65 million vertical feet mark. He’s trying to reach 4 million vertical feet by the end of the season — likely sometime in April.
Hanson is trying to reach that miles to help raise money and attract attention for the Ski Museum of Maine.
A skier all his life, Hanson has spent the past 20 years at Sugarloaf volunteering in a number of capacities: coaching, helping to set up race courses and keeping them maintained throughout the day. He is often one of the first to ride the chairlift in the morning and among the last off the mountain on any given day.
Hanson’s involvement in the ski museum began about a dozen years ago when he was at a Sugarloaf Ski Club meeting. He noticed a piece of paper that was the original record of the first recorded race held at Sugarloaf. He knew a number of people on the list and began to contact them, organizing a reunion race.
The Sugarloaf Schuss reunion race was a big success. Hanson met other ski “fanatics” who were also interested in preserving the history of skiing in Maine. At that time, the Ski Museum of Maine consisted of a group of people who had been collecting memorabilia and stories but had no physical location to call home.
Hanson became the treasurer and since has become a fixture, leading the fundraising campaign to support the museum in Kingfield. There is no fee to visit, but the hours change, so it is advisable to check the website — skimuseumofmaine.org — to find out when it is open, to track Hanson’s progress or to make a donation.
