MEXICO — Work began this week on rebuilding about two miles of Backkingdom Road, Town Manager John Madigan said.

Voters approved a $2.9 million bond last year for roadwork, and $1.3 million of it will be spent on the northern end of Backkingdom Road.

C.H. Stevenson Excavating of Wayne will do the work.

Residents have complained numerous times over the years about the condition of the narrow, rural road and repeated patching has not held up.

The town hopes to finish the last mile, which connects with Harlow Hill Road, when additional funds become available. That may happen when Madigan knows how much the Alder and South Main streets project will cost.

The town recently learned it will likely receive a half-million-dollar Community Development Block Grant to install new water and sewer pipes along those streets. The town will also use some of the bond money to repave those streets once the utility work is done.

Bids will go out for the Alder and South Main streets project sometime this summer. If there’s money left, more of Backkingdom Road will be rebuilt.
