The early-arriving spring makes it easier to believe than in some years, but it’s still a startling revelation that the college sports season is winding down.

At least one local athlete already has celebrated his senior day. Ben Goodall of Norway (Oxford Hills) played his final home games Saturday for Thomas College in a doubleheader against Castleton.

Goodall enjoyed a game typical of his productive senior season in the opening game, a 5-4 Thomas victory. The second baseman had a RBI double, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

And the day got even better. Goodall homered and drove in seven runs to power an 11-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Opposing pitchers have reason to worry when Goodall steps up to the plate with runners on base. He leads the Terriers (24-13) with five home runs and 46 RBIs while batting .331.

He saved his best for late in the season. Goodall was named NEAC East player of the week for the period ending April 15.

In six Thomas victories over that stretch, Goodall batted .476 with a .810 slugging percentage. He belted two home runs while driving in a staggering 15 runs and scoring eight on the week.

The other local player on the Terriers’ roster, James McLamb of Livermore Falls, went the route in Saturday’s second win over Castleton, spinning a three-hitter.

McLamb, a sophomore left-hander, is 4-3 with a sparkling 2.89 ERA after his second complete game of the season. Opponents are batting only .223 against McLamb, who has struck out 15 while walking only nine in 28 innings.

NET GAINS

Thomas hasn’t won at that same clip on the men’s lacrosse field this spring, but the Terriers have shown no lack of firepower thanks in part to three tri-county players.

Erik Tiner of Lewiston leads the Terriers with 16 goals. The sophomore also has eight assists in 13 games.

Senior Derek Racine of Sabattus, an Edward Little graduate, has 11 goals and four assists. The 260-pound Racine also has made five appearances as Thomas’ reserve goaltender.

Freshman Matt Davis of Farmington (Mt. Blue) rounds out the trio of attackers. His 14 goals rank third on the squad. Davis also has eight assists,

Thomas played at Lyndon State on Saturday and will conclude the season Wednesday at Husson.

They’ll face two more area standouts in that contest. Husson’s Ben Landry of Lewiston has 46 goals and 52 overall points. Nick Brown, an Oak Hill product, has amassed 17 goals and 28 assists for the Eagles, who will enter the game 6-1 in North Atlantic Conference play.

BIDDEFORD BASH

University of New England women’s sports have received a boost from three local athletes this spring.

Megan Gauger of South Paris (Oxford Hills) leads the softball team with two home runs. Gauger, a junior, is batting .246 with 11 RBIs while playing first base.

Another Oxford Hills graduate, Hannah Warren of Harrison, has 12 goals and one assist in her rookie lacrosse season.

Those efforts have helped support goalie Samantha St. Pierre of Mechanic Falls (Poland Regional), who has started every game for the Nor’easters while accumulating 104 saves.

UNE is 22-10 in softball and 12-3 in lacrosse, with a combined 16 wins in 19 Comnmonwealth Coast Conference games.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORM

Junior Ben Miklovich of New Gloucester won the 100-meter dash for Wheaton College with a time of 10.73 seconds April 14 at the Brown Invitational.

A week earlier at the Roadrunner Invitational in Ramapo, N.J., Miklovich was part of the winning 4×400 relay team. Miklovich was an NCAA Division III national champion in that event in 2010.

Miklovich finished third in the 200 at the ECAC championship during the 2012 indoor season.
