MEXICO — The Regional School Unit 10 board accepted five resignations and approved three out-of-state student trips during Monday’s meeting.

Retiring at the end of the school year are David Walton, a social worker at Mountain Valley Middle School; Deborah Litchfield, an English and foreign language teacher at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School; Marilyn Chesley, a first-grade teacher at Hartford-Sumner Elementary School; Ronald LaBerge, a social studies teacher at Mountain Valley High School; and Pam Rousseau, a science teacher at Mountain Valley High School.

When reading the resignations to the board, Superintendent Tom Ward said several mentioned the number of job reductions the district will likely make as part of their reasons for choosing to retire this year.

These five resignations bring the total to about a dozen, including Amity Beane, a Dirigo High School Spanish teacher who has been on leave for the past year.

The board also approved two trips by the Dirigo High School Speech and Debate Team. Seniors Shaylynn Weisler and Jessica Sattler have qualified to compete in oral interpretation of literature at the Grand National tournament in Baltimore, Md., May 26-28. Senior Justin Mackin has qualified to compete in a Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., June 10-15.

Debate adviser Brad Conant said many others on the nine-member team also plan to attend one or both events.

Most of the cost will be paid by fundraisers.

Seventeen of the 20 first- and second-place winners in grades six to 10 from Buckfield Junior-Senior High School at last month’s Maine National History Day competition will travel to College Park, Md., June 10-15 for the National History Day Competition. Parents will accompany their children either by Amtrak, with a teacher, or private vehicle.

Costs will be covered by fundraising.
