AUBURN — The Auburn Community Concert Band has announced its second annual scholarship opportunity for one graduating senior in the central Maine area. As part of the ACCB’s 31st anniversary season, the local concert band will award one member of the Class of 2011, who has a passion for music, a $500 scholarship.

Requirements for eligibility include acceptance to a two- or four-year college, university, technical school or music conservatory in the fall of 2012; a grade average of 82 or better for three years; demonstrated community or volunteerism; and applicant be in good standing with high school and all departments. To apply, interested applicants must submit a completed scholarship application, a letter of recommendation from a music instructor or other teacher and a brief essay outlining their passion for music and how they intend to share that passion with others.

Applications must be postmarked no later than May 4. Scholarship applications can be downloaded from www.auburncommunityband.com. The Auburn Community Concert Band will notify the recipient, and then formally present the award to the winning recipient during an ACCB concert performance this summer at Festival Plaza in downtown Auburn.

“This scholarship was created last year with the hope of encouraging a new generation of instrumentalists to join the Auburn Community Concert Band, and continue the legacy of this long-time civic program,” said Band Director Milt Simon.

For the past 30 years, volunteer musicians belonging to the Auburn Community Concert Band have shared their love and passion for music with Androscoggin County. This summer, the 47-member band’s annual 11-week concert series takes place starting June 13 through Aug. 22 at Festival Plaza. A different program of music will be performed each Wednesday evening beginning at 7 p.m. Admission to all concerts is free. In case of inclement weather, performances will be held inside the ballroom of the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch, at Great Falls Plaza.
