RUMFORD — Shanea Kennedy has been taking as many art courses as possible at Mountain Valley High School.

The Rumford junior plans to continue her passion once she gets into college. But for now, she is one of more than 100 art students who have 325 pieces of work on display at the school as part of Night of the Arts.

I like abstract art. I want people to think about what’s there,” she said.

Her display, comprising more than a dozen acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil and charcoal pencil pieces, is named Feed Your Head.

I love the different perspectives and different stories intrigue me,” she said.

Her exhibit is meant to draw different reactions.

She also has a painting on display at the State House. It was inspired by the latest “Alice in Wonderland” movie, and shows Caterpillar peering through a keyhole. He sees the Cheshire Cat and a castle.

Kennedy was honored with a medal and plaque by first lady Ann LePage last month for her work.

Art teacher Steve McGinty said she is a very talented young artist.

She has excellent ideas,” he said.

The multitude of other artworks created by his students include photographs, ceramics, acrylics, pencil drawings, cut paper and myriad other pieces.

Several quilts created by Lorraine Tanguay’s class were also on display.

Thursday night, when scores of parents and community members visited the art show, they also got to hear music by the MVHS Jazz band.

Kennedy, who is also a certified nursing assistant student at the Region 9 School of Applied Technology, plans to apply to the University of Maine next year where she hopes to major in nursing and minor in art.

She loves the creative process, she said.

There are so many possibilities. I can work with watercolors one day, then with clay the next,” she said.
