POLAND — Donald C. Murphy Sr., 73, of Poland died Wednesday, April 25, at his home in the loving arms of his wife, Coral. He was born in Lewiston on March 29, 1939, a son of the late John and Frances (Small) Murphy. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in the Class of 1957. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. Donald married the love of his life, Coral Field, on May 6, 1960, and together they raised three children.

Donald worked for Stone & Irish Auto Body during his high school years, then went on to work at H.P. Hood for 37 years, starting as a home delivery driver and later working in the transportation department until he retired in 1999. Shortly after retiring, he started working as a courtesy driver for Lee Auto. He also worked as chief pit steward at Oxford Plains Speedway for many years.

Donald attended East Auburn Baptist Church. He enjoyed following all the New England sports teams; he also enjoyed playing cribbage, jigsaw puzzles, woodworking and the outdoors. He also took great pride in his pool and enjoyed having family and friends over for parties. His greatest enjoyment in life was his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and following them in sports and school functions.

Donald was a very hard-working man, he was also very courageous and honest. He had a positive attitude, a great sense of humor and a very strong handshake.

Donald is survived by his wife of 52 years, Coral Murphy of Poland; two sons, Donald Murphy Jr. and his wife Renee of Warwick, R.I., and J. Patrick Murphy of Poland; a daughter, Melissa Foster and her husband Stephen of Gray; and seven grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to offer condolences and pay tribute to Donald’s life by visiting his guest book at www.thefortingroupauburn.com.
