PORTLAND — Women in Harmony will present its spring concert, “Winds of Change,” on Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, at Portland High School. Featured will be Portland Ballet’s CORPS dancers.
“Winds of Change” focuses on changes in time, love, learning and activism. The program title comes from Holly Near’s song “I am Willing,” which includes the lyrics: “May the children see more clearly, may the elders be more wise. May the winds of change caress us, even though it burns our eyes.”
About 15 young men and women dancers will perform “Sky Dances,” by Roy Brown, and Carrie Newcomer’s “Three Women” in the first half of the concert. The program also includes “Fruits of the Selfless Heart (words from Mother Teresa of Calcutta),” Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” and several favorites from Women in Harmony’s recently released CD, “A Voice Upon the Mountain.”
“This collaboration with Portland Ballet has been an idea on the docket for quite a few years now,” said Women in Harmony Director Catherine Beller-McKenna.
The 60-member Women in Harmony, now its 19th season, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, in the school auditorium, 284 Cumberland Ave. Advance tickets, $12, available at Longfellow Books and Starbird Music, Nonesuch Books in South Portland and www.wihmaine.org. General admission is $15 at the door.
