Nick Bourassa of Jay is one of two Maine Maritime Academy football players named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame’s 2012 Hampshire Honor Society.
The honor is given to college players from all divisions who held a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher through their entire career.
Bourassa, who graduated from the Castine school Saturday with a degree in Marine Engineering Technology, was joined on the list by teammate Christopher Brawn of Winslow.
On the field, Bourassa was a three-time all-conference performer. He accumulated 2,889 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns in his career, averaging an astonishing 9.6 yards per carry. He also had four receiving touchdowns and three special teams scores.
The federation recognized 721 players from 232 programs this year.
DEFENSIVE DYNAMO
Terissa Ridge of Rumford (Mountain Valley) has been selected to the North Athletic Conference East Division first team for her women’s lacrosse exploits at Thomas College.
Ridge, a senior, joined the lacrosse program in 2011. She also was a four-year letter winner in soccer.
After starting her career in the midfield, scoring nine goals as a junior, Ridge accepted a defensive assignment this spring.
She responded by recovering 40 ground balls, scoring two goals, handing out a pair of assists and forcing five turnovers.
Ridge also was named her school‘s female athlete of the year as chosen by the student body.
BELL RINGS TRUE, AGAIN
Poland’s Brittney Bell of Colby College has been named to the NESCAC all-conference women’s track and field team.
Athletes earn those laurels by finishing in the top three at the league meet. Bell was part of a 400-meter relay team with Brittany Reardon, Annabelle Hicks and Leigh Fryxell that successfully defended its title in the event.
Bell is a junior and the eldest member of the quartet, which posted a winning time of 49.58 seconds.
BLACK BEAR TRACKS
The University of Maine hosts the America East track and field championships this weekend in Orono with two local athletes among the favorites in their respective events.
Allison Fereshetian of Turner (Leavitt) is among the top eight seeds in both the women’s 100 and 400-meter hurdles.
On the men’s side, Frank DelDuca of Bethel (Telstar) is ranked fourth in the 100-meter dash and also among the top 10 in the 200.
BATES’ BOSS IS BEST
Fereshetian’s father, longtime Bates track coach Al Fereshetian, has been selected as NESCAC Men’s Track & Field coach of the year for the second straight season.
It’s actually the fourth athletic season in a row in which Fereshetian has reaped such recognition. NESCAC also chose Fereshetian as its cross country coach of the year in the fall, and he was most recently feted as the top coach in New England Division III men’s indoor track.
NICE ADDITION
Saint Joseph’s College announced this week that it will add indoor and outdoor track and field as varsity sports in the 2012-13 academic year.
The Monks will expand their athletic program under the direction of Ray Putnam, who led Lewiston High School to numerous conference and state titles in track and cross country. Putnam headed up the club track program this past season.
St. Joe’s last added sports in 2007, when men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming joined the ranks.
ONE FOR THE BOOKS
Former St. Dom‘s baseball standout Shayne Curtis of Gray picked up his first varsity hit for St. Joe’s, an RBI single in the Monks’ 10-3 victory over Gordon this past week.
Kyle Neagle of Lisbon was part of a relief corps that limited the Fighting Scots to two runs in that contest.
St. Joe’s is a sterling 36-5 on the season heading into Wednesday’s 1 p.m. home game against Bates.
