100 years ago, 1912
A happy adjustment was made Friday in the small trouble which originated from the discharge of nine men vampers from the Cushman-Hollis shoe shop. The nine men in question broke several lights of glass in the windows of the “saw tooth” stitching room of the shop, the complaint being extreme heat in the room and lack of ventilation. An employe said to the Lewiston Journal. “It was all a mistake. The thing was not properly gone about. The company is always willing to accede to the wishes of employes in such matters when properly made.” Mr. Cushman said, “It was foolish of the papers to print anything about this. I don’t want it and I don’t think they do out there. It is a matter we can very nicely settle among ourselves.”

50 years ago, 1962
Edward L. Davis, secretary of the New England Shoe and Leather Association, met today with Lewiston, Auburn, and Bangor members of the association and called attention to the “alarming” rate of shoe imports as the President’s new tariff bill awaits action in Congress.

25 years ago, 1987
Two controversial mascot live-in cats will be allowed to continue residence in Alvin Bolster Ricker Memorial Library in Poland as a result of Monday evening’s three to two trustee vote in the felines’ favor. Discussion of the issue carried on as the two mixed breed siblings, mottled grey Peaches and jet black Eddie, purred peacefully amid the bookshelves on the floor above the basement meeting.
