BOSTON — The University of Maine softball teams’ season came to and end on Saturday as the Black Bears were defeated 2-0 by Albany in the elimination game of the 2012 America East Tournament.
The Great Danes got on the scoreboard with a single run in the top of the second. Kylie Apostolina scored as the shortstop picked up a slow roller from Katie Wambold and proceeded to overthrow first.
The Black Bears (17-30-1) tried to get something going in the fifth and sixth innings. But, Brynne Davis’ single in the fifth and Lyndsey Jenkins’ lead-off walk in the sixth failed to result in runs.
Ashley Kelly was solid in the circle for the Black Bears as she went the distance while giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out three.

Maine Sweeps Hartford
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Michael Fransoso belted three-run home runs in each game of a doubleheader as the University of Maine swept a pair, 6-3 and 7-1, from Hartford on Saturday.
The first game was a seesaw affair. The Black Bears (25-21) took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
With the bases full, Troy Black ripped a two-run single plating Alex Calbick and Fran Whitten. The Hawks (14-38) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Fransoso jacked a three-run home run over the right field fence in the eighth, giving the Black Bears the 6-3 lead.
In the second game, Maine led from the beginning. Scott Heath led off the second inning with a double. Calbick followed with a double, driving Heath home.
The Black Bears extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. Ian Leisenheimer and Brian Doran singled to get on base. Fransoso then blasted his second three-run home run of the day.
