I missed voting on the Lewiston school budget and I’m angry.

I read my Sun Journal every morning, cover to cover, and on May 16 I see in the City section that Lewiston voters passed the school budget.

I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen where and when to vote in the May 15 newspaper, so I took it out and looked purposely and still couldn’t find a thing.

I am not the only one who didn’t know, but who cared.

I agree with Elizabeth Herrick — the City Council should have sharpened their pencils and lowered the budget.

Here’s a thought: How about lowering Lewiston’s ridiculous taxes and getting rid of the “rain tax” that everyone laughs at us about.

What is the “other instruction” that costs $766,308? Is that leftover money?

I also agree with Herrick that Adult Education should not be the public’s responsibility. If people don’t take advantage of the free education taxpayers provide from K-12 then, like college, people need to pay for their education when they decide that education is important.

The taxpayers of Lewiston need to stand up in numbers and let the City Council know that we want lower taxes.

What happened to the money saved from losing the spring cleanup?

So much disappointment.

Jeanne Martin, Lewiston

Editor’s note: The Sun Journal published the date of the vote last month, after the Lewiston School Committee approved the final budget. The newspaper also published a legal notice with the date and location of the vote, and it was mentioned in a couple of letters to the editor. Ms. Martin’s criticism that no story to remind voters was published the day before the vote is fair. We could have done better.
