 MEXICO — The Police Department has received two grants for additional patrols to check on safety belt use and all-terrain-vehicle safety.

Lt. Roy Hodsdon said the department received $2,000 from the Bureau of Highway Safety to cover the costs of extra day and night patrols to check for safety belt use beginning May 21 through June 3.

The department also received $2,500 from the Maine Warden Service to patrol ATV trails from May 18 through July 31. The department owns two ATVs that will be used by officers, with the occasional assistance of members of the Police Explorers.

Since May 1, the department has received 88 complaints. Among them are the following.

Arrest

* Merwin Voter, 55, of Roxbury Road on a charge of driving under the influence, at 12:54 a.m. May 13 on Roxbury Road. He was released from the Rumford Police Department on $800 unsecured bail. He is scheduled to appear in Rumford District Court on Aug. 12.

Burglaries/Thefts

* An employee of C.N. Brown on Main Street reported a burglary and theft at 3:42 a.m. May 14. Entry was forced through a back window and a large number of cartons of cigarettes were taken.

* A Granite Street resident reported at 5:40 p.m. May 13 that someone entered his garage and took a bicycle valued at about $100.

* A Woodland Avenue resident reported at 2:16 p.m. May 13 the theft of several tools from a tool box in his garage.

Accident

* A bicycle ridden by Walter Fish, 27, of Cumberland Street, Rumford, and a 2005 Kia van driven by Richard Bryant, 77, of Intervale Avenue, Mexico, collided at 4:54 p.m. May 12 on Osgood Avenue. Fish sustained minor injuries but declined treatment. His bicycle was destroyed. Bryant’s van sustained minor damage.
