LOVELL – Dedicated to family entertainment, the Brick Church for the Performing Arts will present a diverse program this summer, blending local talent with appearances by internationally renowned performers.
The season opens Friday, May 29, with the Mountain Storytelling Festival, an evening of diverse tales for adults and families, told by five raconteurs from the Mountain Storytellers Guild. Expect drama, humor, revelation of startling historical moments and creative interweaving of real-life stories and unusual folk tales.
The community is invited to take part in BCPA’s second program, the Stars of Summer Talent Show on Saturday, June 6. Youth from around the region will have an opportunity to perform skits and stories, dance, sing and juggle. Sign-up for open mic is at 7 p.m.
A selected group of the celebrated Fryeburg Academy Jazz Ensemble will play on Friday, June 19. On July 11, two young award-winning musicians – Sarah Sawin, classical flutist from Lovell, and Brian Whiton, saxophonist from Stoneham – will take the stage.
Once again, Jacob Dunham’s Children’s Backyard Theater will present an original play, “Crisis on Thirteenth Avenue.” Shows will be July 31 and Aug. 1-2.
Two favorites from the 2008 season will be back with new programs: TWO, juggling brothers Matthew and Jason Tardy, will perform Saturday, July 25; and visual artist/juggler Randy Judkins will close the season on September 19.
SoMar Dance Works, a dance troupe from Erie, Pa., will perform Thursday, Aug. 6, and Maine ballet-mime performer Karen Montanaro will present “Tanzspiel” on Saturday, Sept. 12.

2009 marks the fourth full season of programs at the Brick Church for the Performing Arts. The building on Christian Hill Road was constructed about 1850 and served for more than a century as a place of worship. It was placed on the National Historical Register in 2003; and two years later, when its ownership was transferred to a nonprofit group, it was reborn as the Brick Church for the Performing Arts.
