POLAND SPRING — Gary Sredzienski, known as the “Accordion Warrior,” will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, at All Souls Chapel.
A versatile accordion player, Sredzienski’s repertoire includes a wide range of world and American traditions; 1960s surf rock; and traditional ethnic and accordion compositions with his Portsmouth-based group, The Serfs.
He has played extensively in the United States and abroad in concert settings, festivals and schools. In July of 2000, he toured throughout Romania.
He has released a number of solo recordings on his own Bellows Music label; and his compositions and music have been used in feature films, including Paramount’s “Bad News Bears” and “A Team;” and Eddie Murphy’s “Meet Dave.”
Sredzienski hosts a weekly 1950s-style ethnic radio show, “Polka Party,” on the alternative and independent radio station WUNH FM in Durham, N.H. In 1990, the Edgewood Center of Portsmouth and radio show listeners sponsored him on a national tour, performing for 93 nursing homes in 15 states over a five-week period. He was named a “Point of Light” for his efforts.
An avid swimmer, Sredzienski raised more than $17,000 in 2008 for the Krempels Brain Injury Foundation in a six-mile winter swim from Portsmouth, N.H., to the Isle of Shoals. Since then, he has raised $50,000 for various charities in five winter swims.
The N.H. Charitibles Foundation issued a grant for the writing, production and performance of a play based on Sredzienski’s musical life and swimming adventures. Titled “Creekman … The Adventures of the Accordion Playing Merman,” it was created through the Harborlight Stage Theater Company.
Tickets to the concert, part of the Poland Spring Preservation Society’s Summer Concert Series, are $7.50 at the door; refreshments are included. Proceeds benefit the preservation and restoration of the Maine State Building and All Souls Chapel, both listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
