LEWISTON — Lyceum Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, July 20, for an exhibit of works by two master painters with very different styles.

Titled “Different Strokes,” the exhibition features works by Richard Field of Auburn, known for his trompe l’ oeil still life and street scenes; and Jan Zaremba, a master of sumi-e brush.

Trompe l’oeil, French for deceive the eye, is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery depicting objects in three dimensions. The viewer feels able to step into or hold the subject of the painting.

Sumi-e brush, or Japanese ink painting, may be regarded as the earliest form of Expressionistic art.

Field studied with Lajos Matolcsy and Carlton Plummer. He became a member of the Copley Society of Art in 1980 and was awarded Copley Artist status in 1987. This summer, he received the Award of Merit in the Copley Small Works exhibit “Juxtapositions” and his work was also selected for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts’ “Summer Party 2012.”

Over the years, Field’s paintings have been juried into exhibits at Farnsworth Museum, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and the Harvard Club Masters Invitational.

Zaremba studied Oriental painting with Zen master Dr. Hisashi Ohta, deemed a Living National Treasure of Japan. He became an instructor for sumi-e and taught at the Japanese Cultural Center in Los Angeles for 18 years. 

After painting a third of a century for universities, art schools and museums, the 71-year-old artist looks back at exhibitions in Germany, Finland, Mexico, Korea, Japan and the United States. This is his first exhibit in Maine. 

“I am honored to bring two such distinguished painters together for this exhibit,” said Tamera Grieshaber, owner/curator of Lyceum Gallery. “Richard’s acrylics and watercolors are a bright contrast to Jan’s washed ink. Richard is a mild mannered, quiet man; Jan is an outgoing character. I think that art lovers and collectors will have a great time with this exhibit.”

The reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery at 49 Lisbon St. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, or by appointment (call 576-4805).
