PARIS — In two weeks, the town will send 665 notices to residents and mortgage holders telling them they have 30 days to pay 2011-12 taxes or the town will place liens on their properties.

That’s up by more than 100 from last year’s 552 notices mailed. The notices cost $5.75 to send by Certified Mail, making the total $3,823.75. That cost is added to the owners’ owed taxes.

Town Clerk and Deputy Tax Collector Elizabeth Knox said Monday the town has been sending more liens in recent years.

She said 376 residents and 289 mortgage holders will be receiving the notices. Compiling the list and sending notices is laborious and will take the office staff a whole week, Knox said.

Chairman Sam Elliot called the rise in liens “a disturbing trend.”

Of the 552 notices sent last year, 220 liens were filed. For 2009-10, 159 liens were filed, resulting in 83 foreclosure notices filed.
