PORTLAND — Grammy Award-winning musician/songwriter Glen Campbell will perform at Merrill Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 16, as part of his Goodbye Tour.

A country music icon, Campbell’s career spans five decades with more than 70 albums, 81 hits and 45 million records sold.

He started out as a session musician in Los Angeles in 1960 and was part of a group of studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. During that time, he played on recordings by Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Campbell’s talent and Southern charm carried him to a legendary solo career with his biggest hits coming in the 1960s and ’70s. They include “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Gentle on My Mind,” “Southern Nights” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

Campbell made music history in 1967, winning four Grammy Awards in  country and pop categories. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Although diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Campbell decided to forge ahead with both the tour and his final studio album, “Ghost on the Canvas.” The concert, presented by Portland Ovations, is a celebration of his extensive career.
