One of the largest representations from Lewiston and Auburn left early Thursday morning for the annual encampment of the Coast Artillery Corps, National Guard of Maine, at Fort Williams. The companies, the Third of Auburn and the Eighth and Ninth of Lewiston, have recruited up a wholesome number and the work of the past winter in the local armories will make fine showings at the heavy gun work in the 10 days in camp. Androscoggin County officials have discovered two new means of income for the County Jail. Although one of the sources has gone untapped for the year, it has been available. The most significant source is a 10 percent surcharge on court fines that was put into effect by state lawmakers during the recently completed legislative session. The legislation calls for 2 percent of those surcharges to be earmarked for county jails. Another source of income is a law authorizing judges to make convicted felons serving time in county jails pay up to $20 per day toward the jail’s overhead costs, which include the inmate’s room and board.
