PERU — Selectmen voted Monday night to hire an architect and engineer to draw up plans for pitched metal roof on the Town Office.
Alan Elliott, owner of Twin Rivers Lumber in Dixfield, pointed out that electrical wires, chimney placement and ventilation are problems that need to be addressed when changing from the flat roof to a pitched one.
He said no one wants to bid because there are no specification for the project.
The board decided to contact Central Maine Power Co. about the wires.
In other business, building permits were approved for a home on Ridge Road for Judy Lovejoy, replacement of a deck on East Shore Road, a wood shed for John Vaughan, a garage and breezeway on High Street for Michael Dragoon, and a house with porch on Mineral Springs Road for Tom Virgin.
An offer from Lester Prue of $2,000 for the Grange Hall was tabled until the board could speak with Prue and check with the State Grange.
The board appointed Jim Pulsifer to be Med-Care representative for three years and Selectman Kathy Hussey for the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste Board representative.
The recently passed ordinance prohibiting selectmen or finance committee members from simultaneously being town employees came up. The issue is whether Hussey should give up her seat on the board or resign her full-time position as board secretary.
Last month, voters passed an ordinance that changes the secretary’s position from appointed to elected, but an effective date for the law was not included. The Maine Municipal Association advised that Hussey should be allowed to serve out her term as board secretary and the law take effect at next year’s election.
Selectman Dickie Powell cited memos that he didn’t understand and other selectmen didn’t have copies to study.
Selectman Laurie Milligan moved to gather all memos from Maine Municipal Association and other sources on the subject and meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, to review all information and make a decision.
It was clarified that the Friends of the Peru School have paid all their insurance bills.
The boat launch will be closed for repairs for three or four days. The bolts connecting each section were not up to specs and did not survive the winter.
