After another Colorado massacre, I’m sitting here having an Andy Rooney moment.
When we were kids, did the media and movies prompt us to do evil or stupid acts? At age 10, I tried to jump off our garage roof with a blanket on my back thinking I could fly like Superman. Yup, TV did that (or was it a comic book?).
I think Andy would have said, we’re here to report the news and movies report fantasies. You have to decide which is real.
This heart-wrenching tragedy leaves us to ask, are media and movies to blame? I think not. There are many emotionally unstable and socially impressionable people in our society and we will never be able to weed them out.
Tragedies like this will never end. What we can do is be extremely vigilant, and always be prepared for an emergency.
In World War II, the catchphrase was, “Loose lips sink ships.” Today we should be saying, “Loose cannons kill Americans.”
Be vigilant for those loose cannons.
Amen, Andy.
