PORTLAND — A Westbrook woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to driving the getaway car in a series of robberies, including one at a bank in Lewiston.

Maria Mattson of Westbrook pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland to charges of aiding and abetting bank robbery, conspiracy to commit bank robbery and interference with commerce by robbery.

According to court records, Mattson was the getaway driver for the January and February robberies of Auburn Savings Bank in Lewiston, Cumberland Farms in Portland, University Credit Union in Portland, TruChoice Credit Union in Portland and Evergreen Credit Union in Windham.

Mattson, 31, was arrested Feb. 15, an hour after the heist in Lewiston. She was captured in Windham along with Paul Sans, 29, also of Westbrook. He was charged with robbery and other counts.

Mattson faces up to 20 years in prison on the bank robbery and interference with commerce by robbery charges, up to five years on the conspiracy charge and fines of up to $250,000 on each count.

She will be sentenced after completion of a pre-sentencing report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The charges are the result of a collaborative investigation conducted by the Lewiston, Portland and Windham police departments, and the Southern Maine Gang Task Force. The latter is made up of investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Portland Police Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
