Whitney Lodge open house
CANTON — Whitney Lodge 167 of Canton will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. Hot dogs and drinks well be served, followed by a semi-public roast beef supper for the lodge’s ladies and widows. Robert Underwood will perform on the bagpipes following the supper.
Ice cream, music Sept. 2
STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2. An Ice Cream Social will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Also available will be brownie ala mode made and served by society volunteers. Everyone is welcome.
Charlie Bruce will entertain with an afternoon of songs like Jud Strunk’s “A Daisy a Day.” He also impersonates John Denver and takes requests.
The Dead River Area Historical Society is open every weekend throughout July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by advance appointment year-round. Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads. Labor Day celebration
LEWISTON/JAY — The Western Maine Labor Council will host two barbecues on Monday, Sept. 3, in honor of the Labor Day holiday. Union members, families, friends and community members are invited to celebrate workers and their accomplishments and to enjoy an afternoon of relaxation and fun together.
Council members have worked with local farmers and businesses to procure food for a barbecue which will include hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and vegetarian options. A children’s area will provide face painting and performances by a magician. Gabriel Zacchai will perform live music throughout the afternoon, and Laura Fortman from the Frances Perkins Center will be the keynote speaker.
The main event will take place at IBEW Local 567 Union Hall, 238 Goddard Road, Lewiston, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
A smaller satellite event will take place at the Steelworkers Union Hall at the intersection of routes 4 and 140 in Jay from 1 to 2:30. The Jay event will include food and socializing, but not entertainment.
Both events will take place rain or shine. The events are free and open to the public.
Thrift Shoppe sale Sept. 4, 8
RANGELEY — Church of the Good Shepherd Thrift Shoppe sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, and Saturday, Sept. 8, at 2614 Main St.
Clothing will be cleared out to make room for incoming items. Ladies blouses, slacks, men’s shirts, pants and all tees will be 50 cents. Jackets and coats will be half price. Household items remain as marked.
Clean clothing and small household items are welcomed. They may be dropped off during open hours or set by the coat rack near the Good Shepherd Undercroft side entrance.

College planning workshop
WILTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop, “Essentials of College Planning,” for adults ages 19 and up at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Wilton Career Center, 865 U.S. Route 2E.
The starting point for all MEOC participants this free interactive workshop that outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills.
The workshop lasts approximately two to three hours. Preregistration is required.
All MEOC services are free and include GED/SAT preparation, college planning, referrals/advocacy, career advising, financial aid advising, college admissions process and application fee waivers for qualified adults.
