100 years ago, 1912
The “schoolhouse plans” question which, like a threatening volcano, has sputtered and fumed within itself by the populace of Auburn for weeks past, broke forth into an eruption at the Monday night meeting of the Auburn city government. The conclusion arrived at in the controversy between the Auburn superintending school committee and the committee on schools from the city government was that the city government endorses the work of the committee, accepts the plans decided upon with additional order to advertise for bids.

50 years ago, 1962
As Auburn school teachers prepared today for the new school year, the recent teacher pay controversy echoed through the Walton Junior High School auditorium as some educators discussed teacher unionization. Teachers were called on, too, to “eradicate” the community attitude that high school education is a “fringe benefit.” Norman Towns, new president of the Auburn Teachers Association, introduced the subject, saying that the “press” tried to force a “starvation diet” on the city’s teachers during the time of budget controversies.

25 years ago, 1987
Pine Tree Warriors Drum and Bugle Corps is leaving for the World’s Senior Championship in Allentown, Pa., on midnight Friday by bus, truck and several cars for the Labor Day weekend. The group will rehearse Saturday for championship competition Sunday. Leading the Warriors is manager Bert Dutil, who is serving his 27th year with the Warriors. This is the third year the Warriors are attending the World senior Championship, according to Dutil.
