The visitors at the state fair are being better guarded this year tha ever before. R.F Leader of Lewiston has this matter in charge and with him is a force of 20 detectives in plain clothes. Every spot and place where pick-pockets are liable to work is being watched and there are a score of policemen in uniform to help out. Mr. Leader will not permit a single drop of liquor to be sold on the grounds. He knows perfectly well that the constituted authorities will do nothing, hence he proposes to do it himself. Neither will he permit any spindle or other swindling games on the grounds.
50 years ago, 1962
John Harris, chairman of the Lisbon Industrial Development Committee, announced Wednesday that negotiations have been completed with Capital Motor Transportation Co. Inc. of Everett, Mass., for an area terminal to be constructed in Lisbon Falls in the immediate future. The location will be on the Huston Bros. property opposite the Midtown shopping Center on Route 196. The 80-by-84-foot cement block modern truck terminal will be located on the approximate seven-acre lot.
25 years ago, 1987
Selectmen in New Gloucester signed a resolution to borrow $165,000 through the Maine Bond Bank for construction of the alt/sand shed at Upper Gloucester and development of recreational lands behind Memorial School and along Rowe’s Station Road. Selectman Gordon Tufts said, “We have never has a debt like this.” Though the town has borrowed in three- to four-year increments for equipment, this is the first time that a long-term debt has occurred. The resolution is for a seven-year loan.
