NEW GLOUCESTER — On Patriot’s Day, Tuesday, Sept. 11, the New Gloucester Farmers’ Market at Connemara Farm on 37 Peacock Hill Road will launch a capital campaign fundraiser to benefit the future New Gloucester Veterans’ Monument.
The event will be held rain or shine from 4 to 6 p.m. at Connemara Farm at the weekly farmers’ market.
The AMVETS Post 6 Color Guard will be present, says William Kiley of the AMVET group.
The event will offer a raffle of a Shaker dry sink made by AMVET member Bill King, a cash raffle and a raffle for a New Gloucester Farmers’ Market tote bag filled with market items.
Entertainment will include music by Jim Gallant, the presence of the AMVETS Post 6 Color Guard and a red, white or blue balloon sale.
The Ladies Auxiliary of AMVETS, Matt Bowden of Cap’n Eli’s Draft Truck and a special offering of Hodgman’s Frozen Custard will be available for purchase. Supporters can purchase a bottle of root beer, a cup of frozen custard or a root beer float with all proceeds to benefit the monument.
The New Gloucester Historical Society and AMVET Post 6 are working cooperatively to create a Veterans’ Monument on land donated by the McCann family at McCann Fabrication in the Upper Village on Route 100 near Peacock Hill Road.
The project completion date has been set for 2013.
Kiley says the estimated project cost is roughly $75,000. Jean Libby of the New Gloucester Historical Society says further fundraising efforts are planned for the upcoming year.
The community project both memorializes and honors New Gloucester’s veterans and their families. Six granite monuments will be inscribed with the names of New Gloucester veterans of all wars. To date 900 names have been recorded. A rendition of the proposed monument will be on display.
